Events: Archives 2006

The most memorable event of 2006 is my hike at 富士山 (Mount Fuji). However I also enjoyed very much my stay at 白川郷 (Shirakawa-go), as well as my short visits at 那須 (Nasu, Japan) and 奥多摩 (Okutama). Besides, I went back to France for a short period, enjoying the zoo de Doué (zoo of Doué) and, for the first time, to South Korea at 제주도 (Jeju island). Let's not forget that my Ph.D. graduation (Hayama & Tokyo, Japan) took place that year.

November 2006: 奥多摩 (Okutama, Japan)
This was my first time to 奥多摩 (Okutama). The 9 of us enjoyed a great weather on our way to 武蔵御嶽神社 (Musashi-ontake shrine). We then strolled near a lake, surrounded by the mountains; everything was quite and relaxing.

November 2006: 제주도 (Jeju island, South Korea)
제주도 is pronounced jeju-do. It is a great island in South Korea, where I went to attend the International Conference on Hybrid Information Technology (aka ICHIT2006). The last day I hiked at volcano 한라산 (Hallasan) with Peter, one of the general chairs of the conference; it was really cold but we had a great moment and interesting talks. I had exceptional views from the plane during my flights between Japan and South Korea.

August 2006: 白川郷 (Shirakawa-go, Japan)
白川郷 (Shirakawa-go) is a UNESCO world heritage site situated in 岐阜県 (Gifu prefecture). This trip was my first time in the area, and the weather was extraordinary. 明日香 (Asuka) and I spent to days in the village, including and evening and night in one of the local houses. We had an excellent dinner, and slept very well. Far from big cities, we just heard the wind and insects singing. I hope I can visit the place at a different season to see the changes in fauna and flora.

July 2006: 富士山 (Mount Fuji, Japan)
This was my first time at 富士山 (Mount Fuji), and we had a terrible weather. The 13 of us started from 五合目 (the fifth station), climbed until we reached a shelter, had dinner there, and slept a few hours. The plan was to arrive at the top of the mountain just in time to see the sunrise. Rain, wind, and rocks falling slowed us down considerably. Anyway, fog (clouds?) prevented us from seeing anything more than a diffuse light. One of us got hurt a few minutes before reaching the summit: a fist-size rock fell onto the back of his head. In the end he just got a big bump, and we did not have to worry much. At least, we enjoyed hot drinks at the top, then the scenery while descending. After this experience, we were glad to relax at a luxurious hot spring...

April 2006: Zoo de Doué (zoo of Doué, France)
The Zoo de Doué (zoo of Doué) is an enjoyable zoo that integrates the specific environments of the hosted species. I owe my first visit there to François-Xavier, who likes the place very much.

March 2006: Ph.D. Graduation (Hayama & Tokyo, Japan)
The graduation ceremonies at 総合研究大学院大学 (Sokendai) and 国立情報学研究所 (National Institute of Informatics) marked the end of my studies in computer science. The first ceremony took place at the university campus in 葉山 (Hayama), and gathered all 総合研究大学院大学 (Sokendai) students graduating that semester. The second ceremony took place at 国立情報学研究所 (National Institute of Informatics), where I carried out my research to prepare my thesis, and gathered the few students from the information technology session; we all received a medal at this event.

February 2006: 那須 (Nasu, Japan)
那須 (Nasu) is an area of 栃木県 (Tochigi prefecture). For my first time there, めぐみ (Megumi) chose the itinerary and drove her cute Peugeot 305 during the whole trip. We were surprised to see so much snow, which apparently remained since January.
